Knee Pain

Introduction

Knee pain is a common condition. It could have a variety of causes, which can range from muscle strain all the way through to gout or arthritis. Sometimes this kind of discomfort heals by itself without any intervention, while more serious events of knee pain may require treatment from a specialist.

Symptoms

Knee pain can happen suddenly or develop over a period of time. It may be a result of strain, sprain, or other types of damage to the knee. The various type of knee pain includes but are not limited to:

Tendonitis

This is the swelling of the tendon in the knee and is often coupled with stiffness and pain. This kind of knee pain is common among athletes who jump frequently like basketball or volleyball players.

Patellofemoral pain syndrome

Also known as a runner’s knee is when the person experiences pain behind or around the knee cap. This is probably the most common type of knee pain that specialists treat and is common among children and young adults. Pain is often felt while walking, running, squatting, and walking up or down stairs.

Osgood-Schlatter disease

This condition is seen in kids commonly between the age of 9 to 16 years. Often a painful lump is seen at the front of the leg and below the knee joint. Sports requiring lots of running, jumping, kneeling, and squatting can be associated with this condition.

Knee pain is common among active and relatively inactive people. Sometimes people that play sports are prone to knee pain and sometimes knee pain can also come from sitting for extended periods of time. The causes of knee pain may arise due to injuries such as torn cartilage or ruptured ligaments., or medical conditions such as gout or even arthritis.

Treatments

The treatments available for knee pain would need to be recommended by a professional after an examination. These treatments may include but are not limited to:

Medication, therapy, arch supports, injections and sometimes even surgery.
